National Mission on Edible Oil (NMEO - O)

SDS actively contributes to the implementation of the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oilseeds (NMEO-O), aimed at increasing domestic production of edible oils to reduce Indias import dependency.
The program focuses on promoting oilseed cultivation—including groundnut, mustard, sesame and sunflower through improved agronomic practices and farmer support systems.
The National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO–O) is a strategic initiative of the Government of India aimed at achieving self-reliance in edible oil production by enhancing the productivity and sustainability of oilseed crops. In the face of growing climatic challenges, integrating climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices into oilseed cultivation has become essential for ensuring long-term food and nutritional security. Climate-resilient agriculture under NMEO–O promotes adaptive farming systems that can withstand erratic rainfall, temperature fluctuations, and soil degradation. This includes the adoption of drought-tolerant and high-yielding seed varieties, efficient water management,
and soil health improvement techniques such as integrated nutrient management and organic amendments. By encouraging crop diversification and intercropping of oilseeds like groundnut, mustard,
sunflower, sesame, and soybean with pulses and cereals, farmers can optimize resource use, improve soil fertility, and minimize risks from climate variability. The promotion of micro- irrigation systems, mulching, and conservation tillage ensures better moisture retention and water-use efficiency, crucial for oilseed productivity in rainfed regions. Sustainable approaches under NMEO–O also emphasize capacity building and awareness creation among farmers through Farmer Field Schools (FFS), demonstration plots, and technical training. These initiatives empower farmers to adopt climate-smart technologies, reduce dependency on chemical inputs, and enhance ecosystem services. Through such integrated interventions, the mission not only strengthens India’s edible oil production base but also builds climate-resilient livelihoods for small and marginal farmers. The approach contributes to sustainable agricultural growth, environmental conservation, and astep forward toward Atmanirbhar Bharat in edible oil production.
Program Interventions:-
> Promotion of high-yielding and climate-resilient oilseed varieties
>  Training on improved cultivation techniques
>  Introduction of micro-irrigation and moisture conservation practices
>  Supply of quality seeds and critical inputs
>  Strengthening marketing channels for oilseed products

Impact:-
>  Increased oilseed productivity at the farmer level
>  Reduced reliance on imported edible oils
>  Improved soil health in dryland and semi-arid areas
>  Enhanced income opportunities through oilseed value chains
By aligning with NMEO-O, SDS empowers farmers to adopt sustainable oilseed farming,
contributing to national food security and local livelihood enhancement.
