PBR & BMC

SDS supports the implementation of People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) and Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) as important tools for biodiversity documentation, conservation planning, and sustainable natural resource management at the local level.

The People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) is a systematic documentation process that records detailed information on local biological resources, including plants, animals, crops, livestock, aquatic species, and traditional knowledge associated with their use. It helps in preserving indigenous knowledge systems and understanding the ecological wealth of a region. PBR also plays a key role in identifying rare, endangered, and economically important species and promotes their sustainable use.

The Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) is a statutory local body formed at the Panchayat or urban local body level. It is responsible for preparing and maintaining the PBR, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable use of biological resources. The BMC also ensures community participation in biodiversity conservation and acts as a bridge between local communities and higher biodiversity authorities.

SDS facilitates awareness, training, and technical support for PBR preparation and strengthens BMC functioning through capacity building programs, documentation exercises, and community engagement activities.
