Poultry Night Shelter

SDS promotes the development of Poultry Night Shelters as a low-cost and sustainable infrastructure intervention to improve backyard and small-scale poultry rearing systems in rural areas.

A Poultry Night Shelter is a simple, secure, and hygienic housing structure designed to protect poultry birds during nighttime from predators, adverse weather conditions, and disease exposure. It plays a crucial role in improving bird survival rate, productivity, and overall farm hygiene.

The initiative supports rural households, especially small and marginal farmers, women SHG members, and Producer Groups, by enabling them to adopt scientific backyard poultry farming practices with minimal investment.

Under SDS interventions, emphasis is given to using locally available materials such as bamboo, wood, and low-cost roofing systems for construction. Proper ventilation, cleanliness, and space management are ensured to maintain bird health and reduce stress.

Poultry Night Shelters are integrated with broader livestock development programs, including vaccination, feed management, and breed improvement initiatives, to enhance productivity and income generation.

This intervention also contributes to women empowerment, nutrition security, and rural livelihood diversification by promoting small-scale poultry enterprises at the household level.
