Mushroom Production Unit

SDS promotes the establishment of Mushroom Production Units as a high-value, low-space, and income-generating agricultural enterprise aimed at improving rural livelihoods, nutritional security, and employment opportunities.

A Mushroom Production Unit is a controlled cultivation system where edible mushrooms are grown under hygienic and regulated conditions using agricultural waste such as paddy straw, wheat straw, husk, and other organic residues. This makes mushroom farming a highly sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural activity.

The initiative supports the production of various mushroom types such as oyster, button, and milky mushrooms, which are rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Mushroom cultivation requires minimal land and water, making it suitable for small and marginal farmers, women SHGs, and rural youth.

Under SDS interventions, Mushroom Production Units are developed with emphasis on scientific cultivation techniques, spawn management, temperature and humidity control, and hygiene practices. Training programs are provided on bed preparation, harvesting, processing, and marketing.

The unit also promotes value addition and entrepreneurship development, including drying, packaging, pickles, and mushroom-based products, enhancing income potential.
