Mega Plantation

SDS implements the Mega Plantation Programme as a large-scale environmental and livelihood initiative aimed at increasing green cover, restoring ecological balance, and promoting sustainable land use practices in rural and semi-urban landscapes.

The programme focuses on organized plantation drives involving a wide range of tree species, fruit plants, medicinal plants, and agroforestry species suited to local agro-climatic conditions. Special emphasis is given to planting native and climate-resilient species to ensure higher survival rates and long-term ecological benefits.

Mega Plantation also supports the integration of agroforestry systems, where trees are grown alongside crops, helping farmers diversify income sources while improving soil fertility, moisture retention, and microclimatic conditions. This approach contributes to both environmental conservation and agricultural productivity.

A key component of the programme is community participation, where farmers, Producer Groups (PGs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), schools, and local institutions are actively involved in plantation and maintenance activities. Awareness campaigns and training sessions are conducted to ensure proper planting techniques, aftercare, and protection of saplings.

The initiative also emphasizes carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, aligning with broader environmental sustainability goals.

Program Interventions

  • Large-scale plantation of fruit, timber, and medicinal plants
  • Promotion of agroforestry-based farming systems
  • Distribution of quality saplings and planting materials
  • Training on plantation techniques and plant protection
  • Community participation through PGs, FPOs, and institutions
  • Monitoring and maintenance of plantation sites

Impact

  • Increased green cover and ecological restoration
  • Improved soil health and reduced land degradation
  • Additional income sources through fruit and timber production
  • Enhanced climate resilience and carbon sequestration
  • Strengthened community participation in environmental conservation

Overview
