CRFM DEOGARH

SDS promotes CRFM Deogarh (Climate Resilient Farming Model) as a holistic agricultural development initiative designed to enhance farm productivity, strengthen climate adaptation, and improve livelihood security of farmers in the Deogarh region.

Deogarh, Odisha, India is largely a hilly and rainfed agriculture-dependent district where farmers face challenges such as soil erosion, irregular rainfall, limited irrigation facilities, and low productivity. CRFM Deogarh addresses these issues through integrated, sustainable, and community-based farming systems.

The model focuses on promoting climate-resilient agriculture practices such as drought-tolerant and short-duration crop varieties, soil and water conservation measures, diversified cropping systems, and improved agronomic practices. It also integrates allied sectors like livestock, fisheries (where feasible), and agroforestry to stabilize farmer income.

Under SDS interventions, CRFM Deogarh strengthens Producer Groups (PGs), Agriculture Production Clusters (APCs), Community Managed Seed Centers (CMSCs), and Custom Hiring Centers (CHCs) to ensure access to quality inputs, modern technology, and collective marketing systems.

Special emphasis is given to watershed management, rainwater harvesting, bio-input usage, seed replacement, and capacity building programs through training, demonstrations, and farmer field learning activities.

Program Interventions

  • Promotion of climate-resilient and diversified cropping systems
  • Adoption of drought-tolerant and improved seed varieties
  • Soil and water conservation measures (bunding, water harvesting, etc.)
  • Strengthening PGs, APCs, CMSCs, and CHCs
  • Promotion of bio-inputs and sustainable farming practices
  • Farmer training, exposure visits, and field demonstrations

Impact

  • Improved resilience against rainfall variability and drought
  • Increased agricultural productivity in rainfed areas
  • Enhanced soil and water resource conservation
  • Strengthened farmer institutions and collective systems
