Community Disaster Training

Community Disaster Training
Under Mitigating Climate Risk and Strengthening Community Preparedness
Overview
Community Disaster Training is a key initiative aimed at building local capacity to respond
effectively to various climate-induced and natural hazards. The programme equips community
members, volunteers, SHG groups, farmers, and youth with essential knowledge and practical
skills needed to act quickly and safely during emergencies. By strengthening grassroots
readiness, the training helps reduce vulnerability, minimize losses, and promote a resilient and
disaster-aware community.

1. Snake Bite Death Reduction Programme
Objective
To reduce mortality due to snake bites by improving awareness, first-aid knowledge, and
immediate response practices among rural communities.
Key Components
>Awareness Sessions: Educating community members on identifying venomous and non-
venomous snakes common in the region.
> Do’s and Don’ts: Clear guidance on what to do and what to avoid immediately after a
snake bite, especially avoiding harmful traditional practices.
> First-Aid Training: Demonstrating correct first-response actions like immobilizing the
limb, staying calm, and preventing movement.
> Referral & Transport Protocols: Informing communities about the nearest health
centres equipped with anti-venom and preparing quick transportation plans.
> Risk Reduction Measures: Promoting safe practices such as using torches at night,
maintaining clean surroundings, and storing grains properly.
Impact
>Increased awareness and timely action during snake bite incidents.
>Reduced reliance on harmful home remedies.
>Faster referral and medical intervention, significantly lowering fatality risk.

2. Lightning & Thunderstorm Safety Programme

Objective
To reduce fatalities and injuries caused by lightning and thunderstorms through community
education and preparedness measures.
Key Components
> Understanding Lightning Risks: Explaining how lightning occurs, its local patterns,
and high-risk zones.
> Safety Protocols: Training on safe practices such as avoiding open fields, staying away
from trees, water bodies, and metal objects during thunderstorms.
>Early Warning Awareness: Promoting the use of weather alerts, community sirens, and
mobile-based warning systems.
>Shelter Identification: Mapping and designating safe shelters for community members
during storms.
>School & Youth Training: Conducting special sessions for students to ensure they
understand safe behaviours.
Impact
> Significant improvement in community awareness of lightning safety.
> Reduced number of deaths and injuries through proper sheltering and timely precautions.
>Strengthened village-level preparedness through early warning communication.

Overview
Community Disaster Training plays a vital role in equipping rural populations with life-saving
knowledge and practical skills. The Snake Bite Death Reduction and
Lightning/Thunderstorm Safety programmes are critical components that address two major
causes of climate-induced mortality in vulnerable regions. Through continuous training,
awareness campaigns, and community participation, these initiatives foster resilience, reduce
avoidable deaths, and build a safer environment for all.
