Millets Cultivation

Millet cultivation is one of SDS’s flagship initiatives, aimed at promoting climate-resilient and nutrition-rich agriculture among rural farming communities under the Shree Anna Abhijan project. With changing climatic patterns, frequent droughts, and declining soil fertility, millets offer a sustainable and dependable alternative to conventional crops.

Millets—such as finger millet (mandia), little millet, and foxtail millet—require minimal water, thrive in poor soils, and are naturally tolerant to drought and pests. SDS promotes millet cultivation through farmer training, demonstration plots, and community-based extension support.

Key Focus Areas

>Promotion of mandia and other local millet varieties

>Training on improved agronomic practices

>Soil health improvement through organic inputs

>Encouraging millet-based enterprises (processing & value addition)

>Strengthening market linkages for millet products

Impact

Through millet promotion, SDS supports:

>Improved nutritional security for vulnerable households

>Enhanced climate resilience for rainfed farmers

>Revival of traditional food crops and indigenous agricultural knowledge

>Sustainable livelihoods through millet-based value chains

Millets not only strengthen livelihoods but also contribute to ecological restoration, making them a core strategy in building resilient rural communities.
