Goat Shed

SDS promotes the construction and management of Goat Sheds as a key livestock infrastructure intervention to support scientific goat rearing, improve animal health, and enhance rural livelihood opportunities.

A Goat Shed is a dedicated housing structure designed to protect goats from extreme weather conditions, predators, and diseases while ensuring proper ventilation, hygiene, and comfort. It plays an important role in improving growth rate, reproduction efficiency, and overall productivity of goats.

The initiative encourages small and marginal farmers, women SHGs, and Producer Groups to adopt semi-intensive and stall-fed goat rearing systems with proper housing facilities. Goat sheds are designed using low-cost and locally available materials such as bamboo, wood, thatch, and bricks, making them affordable and sustainable for rural households.

Under SDS support, goat sheds are integrated with broader livestock development activities such as breed improvement, vaccination programs, deworming schedules, and scientific feeding practices. This ensures better herd health and reduced mortality rates.

Proper space management, drainage systems, and cleanliness are emphasized to maintain hygiene and prevent disease outbreaks. Farmers are also trained in scientific goat management practices to improve productivity and income generation.
