Bio Floc Unit

SDS promotes the establishment of Biofloc Units as an innovative and sustainable aquaculture technology to enhance fish production, improve water efficiency, and increase rural livelihood opportunities.

A Biofloc Unit is a controlled aquaculture system where microbial communities (biofloc) are developed in the water through the addition of carbon sources. These microbial flocs help in recycling nutrients, maintaining water quality, and serving as a natural protein-rich feed for fish, thereby reducing the need for external feed inputs.

This technology is especially useful in areas with limited water resources, as it allows high-density fish farming in small tanks with minimal water exchange. It supports sustainable production by improving feed conversion efficiency and reducing environmental pollution from aquaculture waste.

Under SDS initiatives, Biofloc Units are promoted among fish farmers and Producer Groups to encourage scientific and climate-resilient aquaculture practices. Training programs are provided on tank preparation, water quality management, feeding techniques, and disease control.

The system also contributes to income generation, employment creation, and nutritional security in rural areas by enabling year-round fish production.

Program Interventions

  • Establishment of small and medium-scale Biofloc fish farming units
  • Training on Biofloc technology and system management
  • Supply of tanks, aeration systems, and basic inputs
  • Technical support for water quality and feed management
  • Promotion through Producer Groups and FFPOs
  • Capacity building on scientific aquaculture practices

Impact

  • Higher fish productivity in limited space
  • Reduced water consumption in aquaculture
  • Lower feed cost due to natural biofloc formation
  • Increased income opportunities for rural fish farmers
  • Promotion of sustainable and eco-friendly aquaculture

Overview

Biofloc Units under SDS support modernize rural aquaculture by promoting resource-efficient, climate-resilient, and high-yield fish farming systems that enhance livelihoods while ensuring environmental sustainability.
