Millets Tiffin Center

SDS promotes the establishment of Millets Tiffin Centers as a nutrition-focused and rural entrepreneurship initiative aimed at promoting healthy food habits, supporting millet-based agriculture, and generating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

A Millets Tiffin Center is a community-based or women-led micro-enterprise that prepares and supplies nutritious food items made from millets such as ragi, jowar, bajra, and other traditional coarse grains. These centers help revive the consumption of millets, which are highly nutritious, climate-resilient, and locally available crops.

The initiative supports the Government’s vision of promoting millets as “nutri-cereals” due to their high fiber, protein, and mineral content. It also contributes to improved public health by encouraging healthier dietary alternatives compared to refined grains and processed foods.

Under SDS interventions, Millets Tiffin Centers are linked with Producer Groups (PGs), SHGs, and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to ensure steady supply of raw millet grains and create a strong rural value chain. Training is provided on food preparation, hygiene, packaging, and basic business management.

The program also promotes women empowerment and rural entrepreneurship, as most tiffin centers are operated by women self-help groups, creating local employment and income opportunities.
