CRFM KENDRAPARA

SDS promotes CRFM Kendrapara (Climate Resilient Farming Model) as an integrated agricultural development initiative designed to strengthen climate adaptation, improve productivity, and enhance livelihood security in the coastal ecosystem of Kendrapara.

Kendrapara, Odisha, India is a coastal and deltaic district where agriculture is highly influenced by saline water intrusion, cyclones, flooding, and climate variability. CRFM Kendrapara addresses these challenges through climate-smart, resilient, and ecosystem-based farming systems.

The model focuses on promoting salt-tolerant and flood-resilient crop varieties, diversified cropping systems, and improved soil and water management practices. Special emphasis is given to restoring soil health in saline-prone areas and improving water-use efficiency through appropriate irrigation and drainage systems.

Under SDS interventions, CRFM Kendrapara strengthens Producer Groups (PGs), Agriculture Production Clusters (APCs), Community Managed Seed Centers (CMSCs), and Custom Hiring Centers (CHCs) to ensure timely access to quality inputs, mechanization support, and collective farming systems.

The model also integrates fisheries, aquaculture, and agroforestry systems, which are highly suitable for coastal livelihoods, thereby ensuring income diversification and reducing vulnerability to climate shocks.

Additional focus is placed on cyclone preparedness in agriculture, embankment-based farming practices, bio-input promotion, seed systems strengthening, and farmer capacity building through training and field demonstrations.

Program Interventions

  • Promotion of salt-tolerant and flood-resilient crop varieties
  • Integrated farming systems (crop–fish–livestock–agroforestry)
  • Soil and water management in saline and coastal areas
  • Strengthening PGs, APCs, CMSCs, and CHCs
  • Cyclone-resilient agricultural practices and preparedness
  • Farmer training, demonstrations, and extension support

Impact

  • Improved resilience to cyclones, floods, and salinity stress
  • Increased agricultural and aquaculture productivity
  • Enhanced income diversification for coastal farmers
  • Better soil health and sustainable land use practices
  • Strengthened community-based farming institutions

Overview

CRFM Kendrapara under SDS provides a coastal climate-smart agriculture framework that integrates resilient crop systems, aquaculture, and institutional strengthening to support sustainable livelihoods and climate adaptation in vulnerable coastal regions.
